Much of the time I feel like we live in a world that
is trying its best to drag us down. The
reporting from our media sources accentuates the negative tone in government
and society. Social media continues to
infiltrate the minds of our youth and young adults with destructive
messages. Even our churches are jumping
in the fray of unrest and fueling it in the pews with unhelpful rhetoric. But does it have to be this way, or do we
simply feel powerless to break the cycle we find ourselves trapped in?
An ancient Hebrew writer consolidated a collection of
what are called ascent Psalms. There are
15 and tradition says faithful Jews would recite one of them for each
of the 15 steps that led up to the temple in Jerusalem. They centered the worshipper on God their
helper and opened them up to a deeper praise of the Creator.
I need to break the cycle of negativity that floods my
mind and soul daily. Maybe you feel the
same. My intent for this series is to
guide us into new possibilities and a new space – a space where God is praised
for all things and our days are centered on thanksgiving. As we come closer to the end of 2025, I am on
a search for goodness. I invite you to
join me.
Come and join us for the next six weeks as we read and
reflect on the Psalms of Ascent that will bless our souls and lead us to a
deeper praise of God. ~ Rev. Dr. Jim Hoffman
