Happy New Year!


We hope you had an enjoyable, healthy, and relaxing holiday, in spite of the cold! We are excited to see your little ones again and wish you all a very blessed 2018!



For Health’s Sake


Please take time to review our policy regarding illness. Please keep your child home if he/she exhibits a cough, sore throat, runny nose with green/yellow mucus, headache, eye discharge, vomiting, diarrhea, or a temperature of 99.6 degrees or higher. If your child exhibits any of these symptoms while attending our program, he/she will be sent home. We do not want to infect others in our program. If your child has had a fever, please be sure your child’s temperature is normal for 24 hours before returning to PDO. Other protective measures are frequent hand washing to decrease transfer of germs and increasing fluid intake.


Speaking of Hand Washing . . .

… Our teachers have taken classes on prevention of communicable diseases. One of the most preventive measures of spreading diseases is frequent hand washing of both teachers and children. Since we are washing your children’s hands more frequently, we would like to remind you of the following: Please take your child to our bathroom after arrival in the morning and wash his/her hands. This will help with “germ prevention”, while the teachers are attending the other children during arrival and morning activities. Some of you are already doing this and it has been much appreciated! Thank you for your cooperation. Hopefully, by working together, we can have a healthier winter and spring!



Donations for Baby Grace!

A big thank you to those who gave donations to Baby Grace this last semester. All these items were very much appreciated by those in need! Donations for baby items, diapers, toys, and books are being accepted this month for Baby Grace. Please put your items in the play pen at the top of the stairs. A tax receipt may be found in the large envelope on the playpen. Many thanks!

Our PDO Tax ID Number is 44-6005529 if you need this for tax purposes. A receipt of your tuition payments can be provided also if needed.



Enrollment for Summer and Fall


⇒  Registration forms for Summer and Fall enrollment will be sent home the week of January 15-18.


⇒  Enrollment for the Fall 2018-2019 School Year will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the following days:


•  Week of February 5:     Church members only

•  Monday, February 12:      Those currently attending our program and alumni

        (Past PDO families will be given second choice after currently attending families this day.)

•  Thursday, February 15:      New families


Hours will remain the same: 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday for ages 12 months to five years.


⇒  Enrollment for the Summer 2018 Session will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the following days:

(Please note that Summer Enrollment will be two weeks after Fall Enrollment.)

•  Week of February 19:    Church members only

•  Monday, February 26:    Those currently enrolled and those who attended last summer

•  Thursday, March 1:    New families



Our Summer Session will run for six weeks starting June 11 and ending on July 19. Hours will be 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday for ages 20 months to seven years of age. Children currently in our program will remain in the same room they attended for the 2017-18 school year.

Enrollment will be first come, first served and no registration forms will be accepted before these dates. More details will be given in February’s newsletter.


Open House for Interested New Families

We will be having an Open House for any families not currently enrolled who are interested in enrolling for our next Fall School Year 2018-19 Program. The Open House will be offered on Wednesday, January 24, or Thursday, January 25, from 9:30-10.30 a.m. each day. We ask that you please let your friends who may be interested in our program know about this event. Thank you!



Classroom News


Crib Room:

We seem to have grown over the holidays! We are talking more and really enjoying our friends. We are learning about following directions, being kind to our friends, and picking up toys. Reading books, singing songs, dancing to music, and playing musical instruments are some of our favorite activities! We continue to love our playroom downstairs! We enjoy our crayons and paint dots when we do our art activities. Could you please send 2 boxes of crackers for our second semester snacks? Our cupboards are bare! We cannot have any snacks containing nut products due to the seriousness of nut allergies. We prefer larger crackers that your little ones can hold: graham, whole wheat round, big Cheez-its, etc. Thanks you!


Toddler Room:

We had lots of fun with our holiday parties! Many thanks to our children’s parents who provided snacks, drinks, paper goods, and take-home favors for our parties! You all are much appreciated! We hope that you enjoyed your little surprises from your children. They enjoyed painting and decorating their ornaments! We had fun singing holiday songs, using our bell instruments to sing Jingle Bells, our favorite, reading holiday stories, and making our rafts.   We are now talking about winter, snow, and our cold weather animals. Our “playground” downstairs is especially a hit during these cold days because we have lots of energy to burn! We continue to appreciate those of you who have provided snacks for your child’s class these past months. Your little ones are so proud to pass out their treats to their friends! Please remember that we cannot have any snacks containing any nut products due to the seriousness of allergies. Thank you.


Preschool Room:

Our holiday parties were wonderful. Many thanks to our children’s parents who provided snacks, drinks, paper goods, and take-home favors for our parties!. You all are much appreciated! Your children enjoyed sharing these with their classmates, too! Our gingerbread houses and Christmas trees were lots of fun to make and definitely worth the “mess”! We hope you enjoyed your gifts from your children. They were excited to paint and decorate these surprises for you! We had fun singing holiday songs, playing musical instruments, and practicing for our program. Thank you for coming to our Christmas Program! We reviewed our letters, A-L for December and now will be learning about the letters M, N, O. and P. We also will be talking about snow, winter, and our cold weather friends, including penguins and polar bears. Many thanks also to those who have continued to provide mid-morning snacks for your child’s class. Your children enjoy sharing their treats with their friends and we appreciate your help! Please remember that we cannot have any snacks with nut products due to allergies.


Please remember to pack a sippy/drink cup for your child if your child is in the Crib, Toddler, or Preschool room. Thanks!



Older Preschool Room:

December was filled with lots of exciting holiday activities. We enjoyed learning about different pets, the letters K and L, the number 5, the colors green and red, and star shapes through our many activities. We had fun decorating our room for Christmas. Our gingerbread houses were lots of fun to decorate and we enjoyed painting and decorating our special gifts for our parents! We hope you enjoyed these! We had fun singing our Christmas songs and practicing for our program. Thank you for coming to our program! Many thanks to our children’s parents who provided snacks, drinks, paper goods, and take-home treats for our parties! You all are much appreciated! We had fun sharing our treats and playing games at our parties!


Our Chapel Theme for the Preschool and Older Preschool Rooms for Decemberwas “Happy Birthday Jesus!” We saw Baby Jesus in a real manger, touched and took home real straw, along with seeing all the beautiful Christmas decorations!



Scholastic Book Orders

January book orders are being sent home this week. Order deadline is January 12. Our activation code for ordering online is GQRQK. Thank you for all your previous orders! We have received many free materials for our classrooms!






♥ If BOTH Kansas City Missouri Schools District AND the Shawnee Mission School District are closed because of weather, we will be closed. If one of the districts is OPEN, we will be open. Please check your local TV station for both of these districts being listed as closed. In a rare case that one or both of the districts are not in session due to a federal holiday, teacher conferences, meetings, etc., during inclement weather, these districts will not be posted on the news. Only in this situation, you will be emailed or called about our school being closed.


♥ If your child has had any immunizations since last summer, please let me know in writing so that I can update his/her file.   Every January, I am required to turn in information to the Missouri Department of Health regarding your child’s immunizations. If your child has not received a required immunization, a letter will be sent home with your child.


♥ If your child is being potty trained, please dress him/her appropriately so as to avoid accidents. Many of the children want to be independent and “do it by myself”. If they have clothing that is difficult for them to pull down, they tend to get frustrated, especially if they suddenly “have to go!”   We want this new experience for them to be a positive one and appreciate your cooperation.

Thanks for sharing your special children with us. We have enjoyed seeing them again after our winter break. We hope and pray that flu and cold season is behind us and healthier days are ahead! Take care, stay well, and have a warm and happy January!
