October Newsletter

Can you believe that it’s October?  Yay for some cooler temperatures, finally!  I feel like I’m getting into a groove with some school and office procedures.  I hope you are feeling the same with classroom procedures, drop off and pick up, etc.  We are also getting more involved with Kangarootime.  (Keep reading for more info.)  As always, please stop by, call or email with any questions, comments or concerns.

PDO and Preschool Directory/Sub List

I have completed the school directory.  You can find it on Kangarootime in the documents section.  It is divided by class and students are listed in alphabetical order.  If you requested to be a part of sub list, that is included at the very bottom of the child’s information.

Sub lists are to be used when a child is sick or going to be absent from school.  If it is your child that is absent, and you want to “sell “ your child’s spot, you can email the parents in your child’s class that have identified they want to be included on the sub list.  Please let them know the date your child will be gone and that you are looking for a sub.  Once you have made arrangements, please let me know of the change and I can inform the classroom teachers so they can be expecting the child.  Payment is exchanged between the families, not the center.  If you use Venmo or PayPal or other similar services, please let the parent know that information, as it is an easy way to pay each other electronically versus with cash or check.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

*Please be sure to let us know if your child will be absent, regardless of if you plan to use the sub list.  You can call or email to report an absence.

Baby Grace

Did you know that St. John’s Church partners with an organization called Baby Grace?  Baby Grace provides material, emotional and spiritual support to young mothers in the Missouri area.  You can help by donating baby items at any time by placing them in the pack-n-play in our entry area.  They will accept clothes up to size 5t, diapers, and toys.

Baby Grace and Hope Leadership are specifically looking for Halloween Costumes at this time.  If you or someone you know has new or gently used Halloween Costumes that you would be willing to donate, please bring them to the school and put them in the Baby Grace pack-n-play.  They are looking for sizes newborn up through youth large/adult small (for children up to 6th grade).

Fire Truck Visit

The Missouri Fire Department will be visiting the center this month.  They will bring a truck (or two) for the children to see and talk about as well show them their equipment and talk about fire safety.  This is usually a big hit with most of the kids but it can also be a little scary for some of the children.  It helps for to talk about fire safety with your children at home as well.

Halloween

We will be celebrating Halloween in the Toddler, Preschool, and Older Preschool classrooms on Tuesday, October 30 and Wednesday, October 31.  If you would like to donate something for the party, please see the sign up on your child’s door.  Only the Older Preschool classroom will wear costumes.

You are invited to attend Trunk or Treat at St. John’s on Sunday, October 28 from 4-6 pm.  The event will be held in the back parking lot and will include decorated car trunks for trunk-or-treating, free candy, games, snacks, and other fun activities.  This is a free event open to the community.  If you have any questions, please contact the church office at 816.523.6788.

Kangarootime

•  We have switched over all billing to Kangarootime.  You should have received a notification from Kangarootime with an October Invoice.  Those payments are due October 1.  You can save your banking or credit/debit card information in Kangarootime for easier payment.  You can also check the box to authorize automatic deductions.  If you check this box, your account will be debited on the first Thursday of the month.  If you do not check this box, you are responsible for submitting payment on your own.

•  Some classes may start using some reporting features that Kangarootime offers.  You may get notifications that your child has been checked in/out of the program, you may receive pictures of your child or children in the class, and you may receive summaries of your child’s day that may or may not include more specific information about eating habits, mood, health reports, and if your child slept.

•  I am now attaching documents in the Document section of your account.  I will post newsletters, snack calendars, the directory, policies and procedures, etc.  Please reference this section often for important resources.

•  You must have an active account with Kangarootime to be able to use these features.  There are still a few families that have not activated their account.  If you need help doing this, please let me know.  Please also add a picture of your child to his/her profile.  This is very helpful to the staff when they are looking at your account and generating reports about your child’s day.  We would also love for you to update the Emergency Contact section of your child’s profile.  This if very helpful!

Thank You!

Thank you to those families that ordered from Scholastic in September.  We were able to earn several new books for the classrooms and school.

From the Classrooms:

In the Crib Room, we are adjusting to being away from our mommies and daddies and seem to be doing better each week. As we play in our own room, outside on our playground, and in our “gross motor” toy room downstairs, we are learning to play and share with others, as well as explore new toys. Singing, playing with musical instruments, and painting with dot paints are some of our favorite activities. We love all the riding and climbing toys downstairs, as well as going outside for walks in our big strollers and playing on the playground.  It is fun to see the changes and development of our Crib Room children throughout the year! Please bring a picture of your child if you have not sent one. We will keep it on our door throughout the school year. Your little ones love seeing these!  Please send a sippy/cup with lid each day and wash your child’s hands after bringing in the classroom.

In the Toddler Room, we have been getting acquainted with our room, our teachers, and our many new friends. Some of us are still trying to adjust to being away from our mommies and daddies, but each week our adjustment gets better. In addition to talking about how special we are, we are talking about how special our new friends are and how we can help each other. We learned about the colors red, yellow, and blue through songs, stories, and art activities such as our “Helping Hands”, apple prints, and school bus, Color and shape concepts will continue to be emphasized throughout the school year.   We are enjoying playing outside on these warm fall days.  Our large “gross motor” indoor playground downstairs has been lots of fun, too. Please bring a recent picture of your child if you have not yet sent one. We will keep this picture to use on our bulletin board throughout the year. The children love looking at these pictures of themselves and their friends!  Please send a sippy/cup with lid each day and wash your child’s hands after bringing in the classroom.

The Preschool Room has been doing all kinds of fun activities. We have been making new friends, getting acquainted with our teachers, talking about how special we are, and learning about the world around us. We are learning about shapes, colors, counting, our names, and our fall season through circle time, stories, songs, and art activities. We enjoyed “The Kissing Hand” book and making our own handprint. We’ve been talking about apples and yarn painting leaves, making our “arm and hand” tree and finger print leaves as fun fall crafts! We will continue reviewing many concepts through different activities.    We have learned about the letters A, B, C, and D this past month. Please check our door for our weekly lesson plans. We are also enjoying playing outside as well as in our large “gross motor” indoor playground downstairs.  Please send a picture of your child, if you have not sent one, as it will be used for our bulletin board throughout the year. The children love looking at these pictures of themselves and their friends! Please send a sippy cup/cup with lid with your child each day and wash his/her hands after bringing in the classroom.

Older Preschool Room:  Upstairs has been busy with lots of activities. While making new friends, we have had fun playing and learning all about ourselves, our names, our birthdays, the letters A, B, C, D, the colors red and green, circle shapes, community helpers, dinosaurs, how apple trees grow, and indoor and outdoor safety. We love decorating our room with some of our projects! Please look at our “Apple Book” and “Dinosaur Roar Book” we made for our room. We will be working on learning our addresses and phone numbers. We enjoy learning new songs and acting out the words!  We also are enjoying playing outside as well as in our large “gross motor” indoor playground downstairs. Please send a picture we can keep throughout the school year for our bulletin board if you have not done so. Please make sure to look on our classroom door for our weekly lessons, weekly show and tell, monthly curriculum, and additional information.
